In this tutorial you will learn how to chain stitch, single crochet, fasten off your work and weave in ends. You will also learn how to fasten off your work. I’ve included many photos to help you and a video will soon follow.
How To Chain Stitch
Creating a chain is the bases of crocheting, it’s like your security blanket to a project. When you first learn to create chains, you will discover the type of tension you have. Some people have a tighter tension and some a more loose tension. The goal is to have a tension that is not to tight and not too loose.
Once you create a slip knot, it’s time to create your chain. Chains are easy to do, for some. Believe it or not, as easy as creating a chain may look or be to some, it can be a bit frustrating. So I ask that you have patience with yourself while learning, I promise you will get this.
The Chain
With the hook on your slip knot, you will grab yarn with your hook (also known as Yarn Over or YO), and pull through the loop. You created your first chain stitch.
With a new loop on the hook you will grab the yarn with your hook again, and pull through the loop, now you’ve created your second chain stitch.
Continue on, until you have 9 chain stitches. You got this!
You’ve now completed your first chain! How awesome is that! You’re amazing!! Now let’s learn how to single crochet!
The Single Crochet Stitch
Once you learn this stitch, you will be able to make a lot of items, scarves, to practice rows, washcloths, shawls, beanies, cute Amigurumi, and more! So let’s learn this stitch and after, I will have a simple pattern you can practice with. Let’s get started!
Single Crochet Stitch
Starting in the second chain from hook, insert your hook, grab yarn over. You will have 8 single crochet stitches.
(Yarn Over – YO), you now have two loops on your hook. Yarn Over again and pull yarn though both loops.
You have now created a Single Crochet (SC) stitch!
You’re doing great! Continue creating single crochet stitches, until the end of the row.
At the end of the row, you will chain 1, and flip your work over (turn), and we will begin the next row.
The top of your chains will always look like V’s. You will be working from both loops (V’s)
This is the easiest way to know where to insert your hook when working in rows.
In the next stitch insert your hook through top loops, yarn over.
You now have two loops on hook, yarn over and pull through both loops.
You’ve now started your second single crochet row.
Your second row is now complete! Let’s learn to fasten off (FO) our work!
How to FO (Fasten Off) your work
Once your piece is finished you want to finish your work. By doing that, you fasten off. It’s very easy to do! Let me show you!
At the end of your work, chain 1
Cut your yarn and pull the loop up, to tighten. That’s it! Now you have fastened off your work.
Weave in your ends, DON’T CUT THEM or your work will unravel. This happened to me the first time I learned to fasten off my work. You don’t have to know how to sew, but you do need a yarn needle or two.
These are yarn needles I use. I highly recommend them because they have a large easy to see blunt tip. They are also made of steel.
Front and back of your work
How to weave in ends
Thread your needle and weave in through the back of your work
You can cut the yarn, of go back and weave in the other direction for extra security.
A little added security for your work, if you want.
Weave in the same way with the other string left over. Now your work looks nice and neat.
Oh my gosh! I really hope this tutorial helps you on your newfound crochet journey. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, I am always available to help.
Have an amazing day! Happy creating!!
