Easy crochet Beetlejuice beanie pattern, beginner friendly and fun to make. This fun beanie can be made in about two hours, depending on your crochet speed and how often you change colors. Once you start, you might find yourself making more! When I first created this hat, it took me around three hours since I was writing the pattern as I worked.

Materials Needed

Before you begin, make sure you have everything ready. You can use any yarn brand you love, but here’s what I used:

Worsted weight yarn in, Spring Green, Medium Purple and Zebra Print yarn,  in Red Heart Yarn. (I used Black Multi, in Mainstays yarn)

  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Tapestry needle for sewing
  • Scissors

Abbreviations

  • CH – Chain
  • HDC – Half Double Crochet
  • BLO – Back Loop Only

Gauge

13 HDC x 7 rows = 4 inches
(That means 13 stitches will measure about 4 inches across, and 7 rows will measure about 4 inches tall.)

Beetlejuice Beanie Pattern

Small–Medium Size: Chain 44
Large Size: Chain 47

Row 1: In the second chain from the hook, HDC in each stitch across (46).
Row 2: Chain 1, HDC in BLO across (46).
Rows 3–4: Repeat Row 2 using Black Multi or Zebra (46).
Row 5: Repeat Row 2 using Purple or Violet (46).
Row 6: Repeat Row 2 using Green (46).

Continue repeating the color pattern as follows:

  • 3 rows of Black Multi or Zebra

  • 1 row of Purple or Violet

  • 1 row of Green

Repeat for a total of 45 rows. End with Green.
At the end of Row 45, fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing or slip stitching the side of the hat closed.

Fold your hat in half and work only in the front loops. Sew or slip stitch through the loops to close the side seam. Next, work around the top of the hat — insert your yarn in the first top loop, skip one loop, then insert again. Continue this until the round is complete.

When finished, pull the top tightly to close. Add a pom-pom if you’d like! Sew in your ends, fold the brim, and try on your new Beetlejuice beanie.

How to Make a Pom-Pom (by Hand)

A pom-pom isn’t required, but it adds a fun finishing touch!

  • Cut a long piece of yarn and place it on your table.

  • Wrap your working yarn around three fingers about 50–60 times.

  • Carefully slide it off and place it over the yarn on your table.

  • Tie a double knot to secure it tightly.

  • Cut through all the loops to form your pom-pom.

  • Fluff and trim until it’s even all around.

If you’d rather not make your own, you can buy ready-made pom-poms at most craft stores — or leave the hat as is for a clean look!

First, fluff up your pom-pom, you can also continue to cut around the top of your pom-pom until it’s just about even, all around, then it will be ready to go on top of your hat! If you don’t like pom-poms or making them, another thing you can do is purchase some at your local craft shop, or simply wear as is, or add your own little spin, to the top of the hat.
