How To FP (Front Post) and BP (Back Post ) Crochet

Crochet Tutorials

This is a short photo tutorial on how to Front Post and Back Post Double Crochet. You can also use this tutorial as a reference when you BP (Back Post) or FP (Front Post) crochet, when creating your items.

How to FPDC (Front Post Double Crochet)

Start by crocheting a row of double crochet stitches, in this example I created 8. Ch 2, turn your work and insert the hook through the front of the double crochet post, and complete your double crochet stitch.

How to BPDC (Back Post Double Crochet)

When you back post double crochet, you will be inserting your hook behind the double crochet post. You will insert your hook through the back, and the double crochet post is pushed back, instead of forward. Complete your double crochet.

An easy way to remember this is the Front Post will always pop up and the Back Post will always push back.

Other variations of this stitch that are done exactly the same way are as follows.

  • FPSC – Front Post Single Crochet
  • BPSC – Back Post Single Crochet
  • FPHDC – Front Post Half Double Crochet
  • BPHDC – Back Post Half Double Crochet
  • FPTC – Front Post Treble Crochet
  • BPTC – Back Post Treble Crochet

This is just a sample list, but now that you know how to FPC (Front Post Crochet) and BPC (Back Post Crochet) you can create some fun ridges and textured items like blankets, edgings for hats, and so much more.
